Transportation

Petit taxi

Petit taxis can take you from Ville Nouvelle to Fes-el-Bali or Fes-el-Jedid. This is easier than going around in a rented car or your own car, because you don't have to look for parking places and the drivers in Fes are really reckless. Once you get inside the huge medina of old Fes, it is very likely that you will end up on the other side of it once you've seen and visited all the places of interest, and it will be difficult to find where you parked your car in the first place. A small advice: take a petit taxi that will take you wherever it is necessary. A drive from Fes Ville Nouvelle to Fes-el-Bali should cost you around 15 Dh, which is really cheap. Also, the taxi drivers in Fes are generally honest and turn their taximeters on, especially if you're with an official guide.

Grand taxi

Grand taxis are available as in the whole of Morocco: they will take you to other places or cities in the region and the fees have to be negotiated beforehand.

If you happen to arrive in Fes later in the evening (say 11pm or later), petit taxis may be a little hard to find. But grand taxis can be found lingering around the Fes train station and similar spots. They may take you to your hotel, but it will cost you much more than you would pay a petit taxi. A ride that would otherwise cost around 10 Dh will be 40 Dh or more. The driver will pretend that he doesn't know where your hotel is, so he'll drive around a little bit, "looking" for it, to be able to "justify" the high price. But that's just what happens if you arrive late and transportation isn't available.

Bus

A ride on a city bus in Fes costs around 3 Dh (more for longer transits). The bus lines that are useful for visitors coming to Fes are:

  • n°3 yellow: Bab Ftouh-Place de la Résistance.
  • n°3 white: Bab Ftouh-Train station.
  • n°10: Bab Guissa-Bab Boujeloud-Train station.
  • n°19: Place Rsif-Train station.

Warnings and Dangers

Much like in Marrakech, there are lots of faux guides prowling the streets of Fes looking to earn some quick cash off the naive tourists. Just ignore them. Always look for an official guide, be it at the tourist office or at the reception of your hotel.

You will see a lot of hustlers trying to guide you to a restaurant, hotel or shop they know. Ignore them, that's the only and best thing to do. If you are arriving in Fes with your own or rented car and can't find your way around, the best thing to do (in addition to having a city map) is to ask a policeman where to go. If you ask a fellow on a motorcycle, he will try to guide you to a hotel where he'll seek a percentage for bringing you there or he'll just try to get some cash out of you for showing you the way. Do not yield to these offers, just ignore them.

Wandering around medina at night is not recommended, because you could easily get lost and possibly run into trouble.
